CARDIOVASCULAR PHARMACOLOGY AND THERAPEUTICS UNIT
The Cardiovascular Pharmacology and Therapeutics Unit (CPTU) is leaded by Daniel Caldeira, MD, PhD. The areas of research of CPTU merges the Clinical Pharmacology with Cardiovascular disorders.
Therefore, our aims are related to all aspects of the relationship between drugs in humans and cardiovascular disorders: either the effect of cardiovascular drugs in humans and the cardiovascular effects of other drugs. This includes the development of new drugs, the application of drugs or non-pharmacological interventions as therapeutic agents, the evaluation of beneficial and adverse effects of drugs in individuals and society, and the assessment of drugs’ misuse and its potential impact.
This group has the expertise of clinicians and personnel related to clinical trials which allows to bring the questions from clinical practice to the core of the group and answer them with our own resources/instruments.
One of the main research activities is the health technology assessment, including aspects related to the safety of therapeutic interventions (pharmacological and non-pharmacological), based on metadata (from clinical trials and observational studies) and pharmacovigilance data. Other objectives of the CPTU are assessment of efficacy, added therapeutic value and prescription patterns of therapeutic interventions. Other areas of dedication are the clinical studies, their methodology, and their ethical aspects.
Due to the wide range of different cardiovascular diseases and interventions, CPTU promote the multidisciplinary integration of knowledge in order to translate the research questions to patients’ benefit and welfare.

Daniel Caldeira, MD, PhD

Daniel Caldeira has obtained his MD degree in 2010 (Lisbon School of Medicine, Universidade de Lisboa) and his PhD in 2017 (Medicine/Clinical Pharmacology – Lisbon School of Medicine, Universidade de Lisboa). Works as Auxiliary/Assistant Professor of Clinical Pharmacology (2017) and Auxiliary/Assistant Professor of Cardiology since 2018 (Lisbon School of Medicine, Universidade de Lisboa).
He is specialist in Cardiology (2017) and Clinical Pharmacology (2017), both since 2017. Works as Assistant Cardiologist in Cardiology Department, Hospital Santa Maria, CHULN-EPE, Lisboa, Portugal (2018-).
Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) since 2018. Member of the Nucleus of Working Group on Thrombosis and Platelets of the Portuguese Society of Cardiology (2017-). Member of the Working Group on Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy (2016-). Coordinator of the Nucleolus of the Young Working Group of Thrombosis of European Society of Cardiology (2018-2019).
The main research areas are: Antithrombotic drugs; Safety of Cardiovascular drugs; Cardiovascular effects of non-cardiovascular drugs; Clinical Trials; Big data use; Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis; Outcomes research.

Figueiras, Francisca, PhD
Postdoc Researcher
Francisca holds a PhD in Biomedicine at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain (2012). She has graduated at Faculty od Science and Technology – New University of Lisbon where she obtained her integrated Masters’s degree in Biomedical Engineering (2007). In 2016, she finished a 2-years Master focused on Monitoring, Quality and Statistics at University of Ferrara, Spain.
Ascenção, Raquel, MD
PhD student
Completed her medical degree in 2006. Underwent specific residency training in Family Medicine between 2008 and 2011 at Sete Rios Health Centre in Lisbon. She has worked as a family physician between 2011 and 2015 in Lisbon. Since 2015 she works full time at the Centre for Evidence Based Medicine (CEMBE) at the Lisbon School of Medicine of the Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal where she has taken part in several research projects. She is also teaching family medicine (theoretical and practical classes) at the Lisbon School of Medicine of the Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal since 2018. She has 7 published papers.

Nunes-Ferreira, Afonso, MD
PhD Student
Afonso Nunes-Ferreira graduated in Medicine in 2014 from the Lisbon School of Medicine, University of Lisbon. He has been undergoing Cardiology training at Santa Maria Hospital, CHULN, Lisbon, since 2016. Since 2015, he has served as a Teaching Assistant in Pathophysiology at the Lisbon School of Medicine, and since 2018 he has been a researcher at the Cardiovascular Centre of the University of Lisbon.

Consultant in Cardiology since 2015 in the Cardiology Service. Chair for the Arterial Pressure Ambulatory Monitoring of the Cardiology Department. Specialists in Clinical Pharmacology since 2017. Invited teaching Assistant of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, in the Lisbon School of Medicine of the Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal, since 1992.
Main areas of interest: cardiological intensive care, outpatient cardiologic clinic, echocardiography and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring; pharmacology and therapeutics.

Garcia, Ana Beatriz, MD

Ana Beatriz Garcia is a Medical Doctor (MD, Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon), currently completing her residency in Cardiology at Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Norte – Hospital de Santa Maria. She concluded her Master’s Degree in Medicine in 2018 (17/20) and completed her General Training Internship in 2019 at Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Ocidental (20/20). In addition, she holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Training in Quantitative Data Processing (Catholic University of Lisbon, 19/20).

Guerra, Nuno, MD

Nuno Guerra is a Cardiothoracic Surgeon (MD, Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon, 2007; Specialist in Cardiothoracic Surgery, 2015). He completed his General Residency at the University Hospital Santa Maria – Centro Hospitalar Universitário Lisboa Norte in 2008 and his residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the same institution between 2009 and 2014. In 2014, he was a Fellow at Bordeaux Heart University Hospital (France), focusing on pediatric cardiac surgery, transplantation, and ventricular assist devices. He obtained the degree of Specialist of Cardiothoracic Surgery in 2015, granted by the Portuguese College of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and became a Fellow of the European Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in 2016. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Portuguese Society for Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (2016–2018).

Marques Antunes, Miguel, MD

Miguel graduated in Medicine in 2020 from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon (Portugal). As part of her training, she participated in the Erasmus programme at the University of Heidelberg (Germany) and completed medical electives at Imperial College London, University College London, and Hospital Vall d’Hebron (Barcelona). Since 2021, she has been a researcher at the Cardiovascular Centre of the University of Lisbon.
