Structural and Coronary Heart Disease

STRUCTURAL AND CORONARY HEART DISEASE

Structural Heart Disease

A Structural Heart Disease program has been developed to address some of the current relevant issues in the setting of its different clinical conditions. In addition, it will allow to maintain and expand a collaborative research environment for structural heart disease investigators. Focusing on innovative diagnostic techniques and treatment modalities, we are involved in several research projects within the full spectrum of transcatheter structural heart procedures, namely catheter-based repair of mitral regurgitation, left atrial appendage closure, transcatheter aortic valve replacement and procedures in adult congenital heart disease.

The program is designed to widespread clinical and academic education through our researchers and promote collaborations within other research centers with the aim to understand the clinical outcomes of interventions in several structural heart diseases.

Coronary Heart Disease

Several research programs have been developed in the field of coronary artery disease, addressing some of the relevant open questions in this field. Most of the anatomic information during diagnostic cardiac catheterization and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) derives from coronary angiography, however novel imaging modalities have been developed and we are currently focusing on the innovative diagnostic procedures such as Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR) and instantaneous wave-free ratio (iFR). Additionally, our researchers are actively involved in the application of novel imaging technologies such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), that may clarify angiographic interpretation, resulting in improved diagnosis and additional prognostic information.
